Visit The Gap and Natural Bridge
This natural bridge is located within Torndirrup National Park and is a marvel to see. The captivating Southern Ocean views and jagged coastline are only part of the beauty of this location. Walk along the path to the lookout, which juts out over the cliff edge and peer over the railing to see The Gap. Depending on the sea conditions, which change from day to day, you may either look over the ledge and see calm swaying waters or roaring waves and huge sprays of water reaching the platform. The Natural Bridge is a rock formation that extends out to create a bridge between rocks and is a wonder to see. Pack your camera and a raincoat just in case you come on a day when the sea spray is at its peak.
Torndirrup National Park
Torndirrup National Park is a natural oasis of breathtaking landscapes and stunning scenery. There are multiple natural wonders located within the park that are marvellous to witness, including The Gap and Natural Bridge. In addition to this, there are many other attractions worth seeing within the park. These include the blowholes, where sprays of seawater surge up through the rocks, Stony Hill and Peak Head, where you can see wildflowers and interesting rock formations while you hike to the highest point of the park, Jimmy Newells, a lookout over beautiful turquoise waters and also Salmon Holes a stunning beach with fantastic views from the lookout. These are only a few of the attractions to see in the park. While in Torndirrup National Park, there are a range of activities you can participate in, like hiking, walking, surfing in the beautiful oceans and fishing as well.
Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum
Explore the grounds of the Princess Royal Fortress and step back in time to see what it was like to aid in protecting the Australian shores during the war. While here, you can visit the original gun batteries, see the sizeable coastal gun defences used, and visit the barracks where army officers lived and worked during the war. In addition to the fortress, The National Anzac Centre is on the premises too. The centre is home to the museum, which holds fascinating artefacts, memorabilia, information about the war and stories of those who served. When visiting the museum, you can pick the identity of an actual service man or woman that served and follow their journey through the Great War. While you wander through, you can learn their story and experience and, at the end, see if they made it home.
Go Fishing
Albany and the surrounding areas have an abundance of areas that are perfect for fishing. Grab your rod and wake up bright and early to fish in the area. Some of the hotspots include Emu Point Channel for Herring, King George Whiting, or Bream. Head to the Town Jetty for Herring, Whiting and Squid. Ellen Cove Jetty for easy fishing with your kids. Or Salmon Holes for Salmon, Herring, Skippy and Squid. There are so many spots to go out fishing on land, but if you are able to organise a boat, head out on the waters to catch some deeper sea fish.
Whale Watching
Throughout June till October, Albany is a terrific location to spot whales that are migrating along the coastlines. Some of the best spots to see these magnificent creatures from land are the Ellen Cove Boardwalk, Discovery Bay, Marine Drive Lookouts, Bald Head, Gull Rock and Middleton Beach. Be sure to pack your glasses and your binoculars so you can see these gorgeous animals swimming, jumping and making their way along the rugged coast. There are many species of whales that migrate along these coastlines, providing ample opportunities to spot them and making this a spectacular natural occurrence that you won’t want to miss.
Beach Hopping
Spend the day hopping from beach to beach around Albany. There’s no better way to spend a hot day than lounging in the sun, listening to the waves crash against the shore while you read a book on the beach. The Albany Wind Farm is based in a beautiful location, and while walking along the farm, you’ll see lovely views of the seas and the jagged coastlines.
