Spot the Dolphins
Mandurah is well-known for its resident Bottlenose Dolphins that inhabit and swim through the Peel-Harvey Estuary and other waterways around Mandurah. The dolphins can be seen frolicking all year round, but the best times to see them are between September and May. There are plenty of spots around Mandurah where you can glimpse the dolphins in pods of up to 15 and sometimes even more. If you’re looking for ways to see the dolphins up close, look into a dolphin cruise for a scenic tour and to see these magnificent creatures, hire a water bike and pedal around the waterways or hire a boat, kayak or canoe to get up close to them.
Mandurah Eastern Foreshore
The Mandurah Eastern Foreshore is a central spot with something for the whole family. Walk or cycle along the path next to the scenic water views of the estuary. Kick the football or soccer ball in the park with the kids. Watch the kids play happily on the playground. Cook up a delicious lunch on the BBQs and enjoy it in the shady area where the picnic tables are. You can even go for a swim in the water and float the afternoon away. The foreshore is in close walking distance to cafes, restaurants and other entertainment as well as boutiques and other shopping opportunities.
Ranger Red’s Zoo & Conservation Park
A short drive from Mandurah will get you to Ranger Red’s Zoo & Conservation Park, a boutique hands-on zoo. Here, you will have ample opportunities to interact with animals, offering an exciting experience. There are so many fun adventures you can book in for, like hand-feeding animals, holding and petting them, getting up close with them, and even becoming a zoo keeper for the day to see behind the scenes of what a day in their shoes might look like. Crabbing in Mandurah
Mandurah is a great spot to try your hand at crabbing and is well known for having a lot of Blue-Swimmer Crabs. Crabbing opens up on December 1st and runs to August 31st. Within this time, the Peel-Harvey Estuary has an abundance of crabs that are perfect for catching. If you love crabs well, then you’ll want to make sure you’re in town for the annual Mandurah Crab Fest. This delicious festival is one you won’t want to miss, with fresh seafood, cooking demonstrations, live music and entertainment. Crab Fest is one tasty way to try the best of the region.
Take a Cruise
If you’re looking for something a little different to do, then why not take a cruise? Mandurah is home to a wide variety of cruise options that offer a fun day for all. From the Dolphin River Cruise, where you can get up close and personal with majestic dolphins in the Mandurah region, or the Sunset Cruise, where you can take insta-worthy shots of the sun setting over the water as you glide down the waterways. There are High Tea Cruises, perfect for a lovely day out on the water enjoying a delicious high tea. Or Seafood Cruises, which offers a delightful catch-and-dine experience. This is where you can catch your own lobster with help from the crew, and they have it cooked up for you in a fresh seafood lunch. Lastly, there are BBQ boat hires where you can captain your own mini boat and enjoy a BBQ lunch on the water with friends.
Cycling and Walking Trails
Another superb way to get to know the Mandurah area is on foot or by bike. The location offers many trails to walk and cycle through nature. Starting with the Bridge Loop Ride, a 10km trail where you can tour Mandjar Bay and take in the gorgeous water views. The Mandurah Sea Explorer is a 26 km trek along the coast, passing Doddis Beach and Falcon Bay. This beautiful ride offers picturesque views and a spot to stop and swim if the weather is nice. Mandurah has multiple other mountain bike paths, so if you’re a mountain bike enthusiast, bring your bike and check out the trails for yourself.
Creery Wetland Nature Reserve
Bring your walking shoes and binoculars, and get ready to explore the Creery Wetland Nature Reserve. This reserve is an important habitat for the birds and native marsupials that call the Creery Wetlands home. Take your time wandering through the wetlands, stopping to take in the informative signs and at the designated bird-watching spots. The Creery Wetlands are fully fenced off to protect the wildlife within, and so are an essential conservation for native animals. Within the wetlands, you might expect to find pelicans, ospreys, and other waterbirds, as well as Quendas, a cute native marsupial.
Get Out on the Water
While in Mandurah, there are plenty of water activities to partake in. You can hire jet skis to zip along the sparkling blue waters. There are guided tours as well as self-hire jet skis so you can explore the area by yourself. If you want to catch something for dinner, you can join a fishing charter and make a day out of it, spending the day doing what you love and seeing if you get lucky and catch some fish to bring home. If you’re looking for something a little slower-paced, rent a paddleboard, get out on the calm waters, and glide along while trying to spot any fish below. Hire a kayak to get around in, cutting through the waves as you go or go for a swim and spend the day splashing about in the water.
Head to the Local Markets
There are many great markets worth checking out in the Mandurah and surrounding areas. One local to Madurah is the Mandjar Markets, which run weekly for several months of the year. The Mandjar Markets have a range of stallholders to visit and browse through with goods that you’ll want to bring home with you. There is fresh produce from local growers, homemade gourmet products like jams, honey, and other pantry items, handmade arts and crafts, homewares and much more.
