You'll be lowered down into a mine which was used to remove minerals from the earth for processing. Learn about the history of mining within Mount Isa, get up close and personal with the tools and machinery used, and even have a go at working some. Mount Isa Rodeo
If you're in the Mount Isa area in August, then attending the Mount Isa Rodeo is a must. Book your tickets early because this is an event you don't want to miss. Sit in the crowd and feel the electric energy as you watch the skilled riders evade being bucked off by prized bulls. This sport isn't for the faint of heart, as you'll be on the edge of your seat from the beginning till the end. In addition to the rodeo championship, there are other events to take advantage of, including Rodeo Rock Concerts with great live performances from terrific bands, as well as a big BBQ event that will leave your mouth watering.
Visit Lake Moondarra
Need a break from the heat? Head to Lake Moondarra for the day. Lake Moondarra is just north of Mount Isa and a wonderful spot to bring the family to spend the day in nature. Bring your bathers and fishing equipment for a fun day in the sun. Cool off from the warm weather with a swim in the lake, or try stand-up paddle boarding across the calm waters. Bring your canoe or kayak to glide through the still lake and explore the surroundings. Or if you have the equipment, bring your boat and try to catch a fish! There are barbecues on site where you can cook up your catch or have a yummy BBQ with your family, and there is plenty of space to spread out and explore.
Learn About Indigenous Culture
Spend time learning about the Indigenous Australians of the region, their culture and bush tucker with the Outback at Isa Bush Tucker Experience. Take a guided tour with an Indigenous Heritage Bush Guide and explore the outback at Isa Native Botanical Garden. Learn about traditional tools, medicine and food and the use of plants within Indigenous communities that have been passed down from generation to generation. You'll visit a fish hatchery and learn about native fish, as well as the Mount Isa History Museum. Lake Julius
Just over an hour north of Mount Isa is Lake Julius, a vast dam open to visitors. This beautiful lake is a terrific location to bring your boat and cruise through the waters. If you're an avid fisher, bring your gear because fishing is permitted at Lake Julius, and there are plenty of fish to catch. Explore the land surrounding the lake and bring your binoculars to spot any wildlife, including the range of birds that call this lake home. While here, you can participate in other water activities too, like swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, sailing and more.

Immerse yourself in nature in the outback with a camping trip in Mount Isa or the surrounding area. There are a range of beautiful locations to set up camp in for the night. Due to Mount Isa's remote location, there is minimal light pollution to block out the stars in the sky. The Riversleigh Fossil Centre is home to a vast range of fascinating fossils that were discovered in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area.
